HappiJar, by Glen Cooper. It's the little things that count in life

My good friend and fellow engineering blogger, Glen Cooper, sent me a link to his fantastic new project. The more I read, the more excited I became. What a wonderful use of programming and engineering skills! Here it is...HappiJar!

About Glen Cooper:

Glen is a career engineer who discovered the power of gratitude and being thankful for the little things when launching his own business 2 years ago. The continuous effect of recording the great stuff and connecting with those who make a difference strengthened his relationships both in and outside of his business. Being entrepreneurial by nature, Glen embarked upon months of reading into the 'science of gratitude' and the phone app market.

What emerged was the idea and design behind HappiJar. It didn't stop there. Glen quickly reached out and contacted graphic designers, artists business people, happiness experts and his own friends and family. Gradually a team of fans for the idea was assembled. 4 months after the original design hit Glen's sketch pad, he launched a project on KickStarter to raise funding. The goal is to raise enough capital to build a fantastic phone app, which can only lead to making the world a happier place.

Please join him and his team on this epic journey and pledge your support for happiness.

According to The KickStarter Project:
"HappiJar is a phone app which has been designed to make us all feel happier! Daily or weekly, you record the little things that make you smile and feel grateful for onto beautifully designed buttons within the app.

You can do this using text, photos and voice messages. These HappiButtons are then posted into your very own HappiJar, saved away for you to randomly encounter them at a later date - perhaps when you need something extra to inspire you to have a great day. To begin sharing these thoughts and blessings, you connect with your friends and families HappiJar's. Then, you can thank those who mean the most to you - by giving them a happy buzz too :)

A simple idea, wrapped in a beautiful artistic package."

The Mayo Clinic asserts that positive thinking helps with stress management and can even improve your health. They say that some of the health benefits that positive thinking may provide are:

  • Lower rates of depression
  • Lower levels of distress
  • Greater resistance to the common cold
  • Better psychological and physical well-being
  • Reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease
  • Better coping skills during hardships and times of stress
Shawn Anchor is the winner of over a dozen distinguished teaching awards at Harvard University, where he delivered lectures on positive psychology in the most popular class at Harvard. His research and lectures on happiness and human potential have received attention in The New York Times, Boston Globe, The Wall Street Journal, as well as on NPR and CNN Radio, and he travels around the United States and Europe giving talks on positive psychology to Fortune 500 corporations, schools, and non-profit organizations.

In Shawn's TEDxBloomington presentation, he says that most modern research focuses on the average, but that "if we focus on the average, we will remain merely average." He wants to study the positive outliers, and learn how not only to bring people up to the average, but to move the entire average up.
